Climate change presents a global threat, particularly in Ethiopia. We are striving to maximize our limited resources, making sacrifices across various priorities. My cabinet just approved a special fund for green legacy and land restoration which will allocate from 0.5% -1% of the national budget. In 2024 alone, the government mobilized 29 million Ethiopians, resulting in the planting of over 7.5 billion seedlings. Notably, we achieved a remarkable milestone of 615.7 million seedlings planted in a single day across 318,400 hectares of geo-referenced sites. We are on a mission to create a climate-resilient society by planting 50 billion eco-friendly seedlings by 2026.

Dr. Girma Amente , H.E. Mette Frederiksen , H.E. Ato H/mariam Desalegn , Ms Cindy H. Mccain , Dr. Namukolo Covic , AfDB President

Brief: Ethiopia is actively expanding wheat cultivation in the lowland areas and intensifying efforts in midland and highland regions using climate-smart practices to boost production and productivity. This ensured the generation of foreign currency via export, besides resilience capacity enhancement of vulnerable communities. In the potential lowland regions, scaling up is ongoing in an accelerated manner by adjusting the planting time based on Climate variability occurrence in the indicated areas. Climate-smart agricultural practices are considered across the food systems value chain. This approach supported the producers as it is a good method to ensure sustainability through improvement of soil fertility, utilization of integrated pest management, efficient utilization of water resources, and nutrient recycling, which in turn maximize income generation. These achievements will be presented to international stakeholders, demonstrating Ethiopia’s progress in sustainable wheat production and its positive impact on food security and economic resilience. The wheat initiative has already yielded transformative results, reducing the country’s reliance on wheat imports and positioning Ethiopia as a potential exporter in the region. The program has also created jobs, strengthened rural economies, and contributed to broader efforts in climate adaptation, making it a key pillar in Ethiopia’s agricultural development strategy. Similarly, the Bounty of the Basket, Yelemat Tirufat, iis a four-year development program that aims to boost productivity and production of dairy, eggs, chicken meat, and honey and related hive products. The main developmental objectives of Yelemat Tirufat are to accelerate efforts to achieve food self-sufficiency and ensure nutritional opulence at the family and national levels. The program has also the added objective of creating job opportunities, increasing export, and hastening import substitution (i.e., replacing imported animal products with those processed domestically). Moreover it plays highly significant role for the reduction of GHG emission in the livestock sector through introduction of climate smart improved technologies which in enhance the production and productivity of the smallholder farmers. Keynote Speech: • H.E Ambassador, Taye Atseke selasie, President of Ethiopia • Ms Cindy H. Mccain, Executive Director of WFP

Brief: Ethiopia is increasingly facing climate challenges, including droughts and flooding, which impact agriculture, water resources, and overall economic stability. The government has expressed commitment to climate resilience through its Climate Resilient economic development strategies and initiatives. This strategy aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while promoting sustainable growth across various sectors, including agriculture, energy, and infrastructure. Ethiopia actively collaborates with international organizations, including GGGI, WB, EIB, AfDB, and other financial institutions, to access innovative financing solutions. These partnerships aim to enhance the country’s capacity to implement climate projects effectively. Ethiopia has a range of projects suitable for Green Bond financing, including: • Renewable energy generation (solar, wind, and hydropower), • Sustainable agriculture initiatives, • Climate-resilient infrastructure development etc Debt for Climate Swaps present a unique opportunity for Ethiopia to alleviate its debt burden while redirecting funds toward climate initiatives. By negotiating with international creditors, Ethiopia can exchange portions of its debt for commitments to invest in projects that promote climate resilience. These swaps not only provide immediate financial relief but also foster long-term investment in sustainable development. This approach aligns with Ethiopia’s goals of reducing vulnerability to climate change and supporting sustainable economic growth.

Brief: Ethiopia is recognized as one of the most climate-vulnerable yet ambitious countries globally. The social and economic impacts of climate change are already significant and are projected to worsen. The country faces considerable climate variability, experiencing droughts and floods every three years due to erratic rainfall. This variability has led to water scarcity, degraded water quality, and chronic food insecurity, with most rural populations relying on groundwater from shallow wells, deep boreholes, and springs. Flooding from extreme rainfall remains a major issue, worsened by inadequate climate-resilient water infrastructure. Promoting Universal Access to WASH initiative through the CR-WASH Program at COP29 is essential
